COACH PRIME HAS CANCER

Deion Sanders, affectionately known as "Coach Prime," has long been a figure of resilience and inspiration, both on and off the field. As the head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes, Sanders has transformed the program with his dynamic leadership and unyielding spirit. However, in July 2025, Sanders faced one of his most formidable challenges yet: a diagnosis of aggressive bladder cancer. This article explores his journey through this health battle, highlighting his strength, faith, and determination to return to the sidelines stronger than ever.

A Shocking Diagnosis

On July 28, 2025, Sanders and his medical team from CU Anschutz and UCHealth addressed the media during the first 2025 camp news conference, revealing that he had been diagnosed with bladder cancer earlier in the year. The announcement came after months of speculation about his health, as Sanders had been noticeably absent from public appearances following the Colorado Buffaloes' spring practice in April. The diagnosis was a significant blow, with Sanders admitting he had created a will in May, uncertain about his future.

The cancer was described as aggressive, requiring extensive medical intervention. Sanders underwent 14 surgeries, including a bladder removal, to combat the disease. Despite the grueling process, his medical team announced that Sanders was cured of the cancer following surgery, a testament to both modern medical advancements and his unwavering determination. Sanders expressed gratitude for the doctors and support system around him, noting, “The process wasn’t easy … I was truly unsure if I would make it to this point.”

A History of Health Challenges

This was not Sanders’ first encounter with serious health issues. In 2021, he faced life-threatening blood clots in his legs, which led to the amputation of two toes and multiple surgeries. He spent 23 days in the hospital and underwent rehabilitation in a wheelchair, yet he returned to coach Jackson State to a championship and later led Colorado to a 9-3 regular season in 2024. His ability to overcome such adversities has become a hallmark of his character, and this latest battle with cancer further underscores his resilience.

Throughout his health struggles, Sanders has maintained a positive outlook, often attributing his strength to his faith. In a June 2025 Instagram post, he wrote, “God is so good, faithful & consistent! Thank you, Lord,” emphasizing his belief that divine support has guided him through his challenges. His openness about his faith has resonated with fans and supporters, who have rallied behind him with prayers and encouragement.

Keeping His Family and Team Focused

One of the most remarkable aspects of Sanders’ journey is his commitment to shielding his family and team from the full weight of his health struggles. During his cancer treatment, Sanders kept the severity of his condition private, even from his sons, Shilo and Shedeur, telling them it was merely another issue with his foot. This allowed them to focus on their own paths—Shilo vying for a roster spot with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Shedeur preparing for the NFL Draft. Sanders’ selflessness ensured that his children and players remained focused on their goals, even as he faced significant uncertainty.

Despite his absence from Boulder during parts of the summer, Sanders remained engaged with the Colorado Buffaloes. Strength coach Andreu Swasey stepped up to lead summer workouts, and Sanders stayed connected with his team, ensuring the program maintained its momentum as they prepared for the 2025 season opener against Georgia Tech on August 29. His son, Deion Sanders Jr., shared glimpses of his recovery, noting that Coach Prime was “back active, moving around” at their Texas estate, engaging in activities like fishing and driving a boat.

A Beacon of Inspiration

Sanders’ health journey has not only been a personal triumph but also a source of inspiration for others. His visit to UCHealth’s Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Clinic in Longmont in April 2024, where he connected with patients recovering from various illnesses and injuries, showcased his ability to uplift those facing their own battles. Sanders shared words of encouragement, drawing from his own experiences to inspire hope and resilience. “When I come to a hospital like this and I’m seeing some of the patients that are rehabbing and getting themselves back together … you still see the smile and the love and passion inside of them,” he said.

Additionally, Sanders partnered with Aflac to deliver My Special Aflac Ducks to pediatric patients with cancer and sickle cell disease at Children’s Hospital Colorado in June 2024. His presence brought joy to young patients, reinforcing his commitment to giving back to the community even amidst his own health challenges. “This is my second My Special Aflac Duck delivery, and I’m so honored and humbled to spend some time with these incredibly strong and brave kids,” Sanders remarked.

Looking Ahead to the 2025 Season

With his cancer now behind him, Sanders is gearing up for his third season with the Colorado Buffaloes, who are coming off an 8-5 record and an Alamo Bowl appearance in 2024. The team faces new challenges with the departure of star players Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter to the NFL, but Coach Prime remains optimistic about the roster’s potential. “They were great players, but I think the rest of the group has a chance to be even better this season,” he said. His focus on building a cohesive, driven team reflects his broader philosophy of perseverance and growth.

Sanders’ recovery has also been bolstered by his commitment to health and fitness, a principle he has championed as UCHealth’s “Chief Motivation Officer” for the Ready. Set. CO challenge. His disciplined approach to diet, hydration, and exercise—such as weight training and cycling—has helped him maintain the physical and mental strength needed to overcome his health setbacks and lead his team.

A Legacy Beyond the Field

Deion Sanders’ battle with bladder cancer is a powerful chapter in his storied life, one that highlights his ability to face adversity with courage, faith, and an unrelenting drive to succeed. From his days as a two-sport superstar to his transformative tenure as Coach Prime, Sanders has consistently defied expectations. His recovery from cancer, coupled with his ongoing commitment to uplifting others, solidifies his legacy as not just a coach or athlete, but a beacon of hope and resilience.

As he prepares to lead the Colorado Buffaloes into the 2025 season, Sanders’ journey serves as a reminder that challenges, no matter how daunting, can be overcome with determination and support. “God is good,” Sanders reiterated during his press conference, a mantra that encapsulates his outlook on life and his unwavering belief in brighter days ahead.
